Dearest gentle reader,

In a world where romance has become a dead art, few productions have captured the hearts and minds of the Ton quite like Bridgerton. This reimagined period piece, inspired by the beloved novels with the same name, takes the elegance and grandeur of the Regency era, and blends it with modern sensibilities, creating its own unique charm and storytelling that is both indulgent and enchanting. Appraised here in the spirit of a certain infamous anonymous society columnist for those unfamiliar with the series.

Across its four seasons, Bridgerton has cultivated a devoted following, and with good reason. It offers romance and love in its most idealized and sought after form in our modern world; through courting, longing glances at the most beautiful of balls, and the delicate art of yearning so often neglected in today’s world.

The Bridgerton Family Affairs

Bridgerton follows the life of the Bridgerton family, a prominent aristocratic house in London. The household consists of eight siblings and each season is centered around a sibling’s romantic adventures, their journey towards love and marriage, and society’s expectations and scandals surrounding them. The show also features an anonymous columnist in the society papers, revealing the Ton’s secrets and scandals in a very witty and sharp-tongued manner, and their fascination with finding the identity of this person who goes by the pseudonym Lady Whistledown.

The visuals and aesthetics are equally irresistible. Though not known for their historical accuracy similar to the stories themselves, their pastel colors, lavish gowns and estates reminiscent of the Georgian and Regency-era architecture and style has revived the Ton’s love and fascination for the classics. This also includes music, in which the show covers modern pop songs, and turns them into beautiful orchestral pieces.

The Tale of Benedict’s Reluctant Heart

With that said, dearest reader, there is now a rather special announcement to make, a new season of Bridgerton has officially come and gone, and the Ton is abuzz with the latest gossip. It seems that yet again another Bridgerton gentleman has fallen, and a new love story has graced our society papers and was displayed for us upon a most curious glowing screen. This new season places Benedict the middle child, as our elusive diamond. Known for his love for the arts including painting and drawing, coupled with his free-spirited nature, Benedict has long resisted society’s expectations of marriage. His refusal to engage with the ladies of the Ton, stems from his fear of not being loved and wanted for himself and who he is, but for the name he bears. Yet as we’ve come to find out, even the most reluctant hearts are not immune to love’s treacherous tides.

Benedict, although a fan favorite, his season has left the viewers a tad disappointed, and at times perplexed. The story unfolds with a tale reminiscent of Cinderella, steeped in angst and forbidden love. While the premise is quite enchanting and whimsical, one cannot help but notice the many flaws in the plot. For example, Sophie never reading her father’s will for years, and her rather convenient acceptance into high society by British aristocracy and Queen Charlotte herself. Something that felt like an easy pretext to many fans online who were hoping for a more dramatic ending to Benedict’s love story.

Love and Societal Expectations

Then of course, there is Mr. Bridgerton himself. It would seem, dear reader, that no Bridgerton man is spared the folly of love. After four seasons of observing the brothers commit a series of unfortunate missteps, one has to resign to the fact that it’s a rite of passage that must not be interfered with. The most egregious of all is Benedict proposing to the love of his life to be his mistress and not recognizing her as the lady in silver. He simply never imagined or even considered the idea that she could be a maid of low birth, a fact that left many viewers cringing for days.

Yet, for all its missteps, this love story is not without its charms. The love, joy and intimacy between Benedict and Sophie was so perfectly and effortlessly executed with beautiful scenes of them together in the cottage playing and enjoying each other’s company in the quiet seclusion of the countryside. These moments of playfulness and tenderness felt both genuine and deeply moving, and it is in these stolen moments that the season truly shines.

Sophie’s storyline also proves to be a most compelling narrative. It highlights women’s vulnerabilities in such hierarchical societies, especially ones of low birth. Determined not to repeat her mother’s mistakes, she strongly resists becoming yet another hidden love, destined to bear children who would be shunned by high society. Her fears are valid especially since it has been her lived experience since her father passed away. These pivotal events lend her character a depth that is both heartbreaking and commendable.

A Quill Grown Dull

As for Lady Whistledown herself, one must confess a certain disappointment in her portrayal this season. It appears that her lack of anonymity has made her more cautious and subdued in the way she delivers her gossip, and the struggles she faces in realizing that what she writes has sometimes dire consequences for the people involved. However, with all of that said, one cannot help but miss the once sharp tongued Whistledown and how she used to deliver her society letters, with biting wit and suspense. Her decision to abandon the column altogether instead of using her immense influence for a greater purpose such as speaking up for women’s rights like Eloise suggested feels, dare one say, like a missed opportunity. Perhaps there is more to come in the next seasons, or possibly, the character herself is not the revolutionary some had imagined.

And so, dear reader, Season 4 of Bridgerton presents a tale both captivating and flawed. It’s a story rich in romance and beauty, yet not without its shortcomings. It reminds us all that even in the most dazzling of worlds, perfection remains ever far out of reach. So if you find your evenings lacking in luster and yearning, you simply must turn your gaze towards Bridgerton as well as the story of Queen Charlotte, because to miss it would be a scandal and a social failing of the highest order.

Yours truly,
A most observant critic
